Threadology Class
I took the Threadology Class from Superior Threads in St. George, Utah, at the end of September 2010 It was a very interesting class. I learned a lot about thread, needles, & other products they carry. I would recommend this class to any one who is interested in thread, which should be any one that quilts, embroiders, sews, or does any other fiber arts.
About the Area
St. George, Utah is in the southwest corner of Utah approximately 125 miles from Las Vegas, Nevada and just six miles north of the Arizona border. It is close to Zion National Park in southern Utah and within easy driving distance to the north rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
St. George has a population of around 145,000. It retains a small town feel though and the people are friendly. My friend and I found several of the quilt shops that St. George supports. I was amazed the there were at least 8 in St. George and the surrounding area!
About Superior Threads Facility
The building the houses the Superior Threads warehouse and classrooms feels new! It is spacious on the main floor with several long arm machines lined up along the back area. They will be starting some new classes with the long arms soon. Then there is the lecture area with tables and really comfortable chairs, plus two classrooms. Each classroom is capable of seating about 20 people. Downstairs is the offices, warehouse, bobbin winding room, and shipping operations. What a treat to walk through the warehouse and drool over all the pretty spools and cones of thread in any color imaginable! Their catalog of products is fabulous with pre-wound bobbins, spools and cones of thread, notions, and some patterns. It is easy to get carried away “shopping” the warehouse, which you are allowed to do during your class days! The bobbin winding machines are interesting to watch and capable of winding 100's of bobbins in a very short time. The shipping area is clean and efficient looking, which keeps Superior Threads shipments accurate and timely.
About the Threadology Class
The Threadology Class is three full days of fun! Starting at 8 a.m on the first day. They open with a time to get to know your other classmates. This is great fun and breaks the “ice” of getting to know your those you will be around for the next three days! Next, there is an introduction by Dr. Bob (Bob Purcell, President of Superior Threads) to some of Superior's threads and some of Superior's history and philosophy. During this introduction you can sit and listen to everything without worrying about taking notes, because there is a book that accompanies the class. Everything is covered in the book! After the introduction, lunch is provided. Let me just say that Superior Threads puts on a fine spread! The meals (two a day except the last day) are catered. The food is excellent! They make every effort to accommodate every one, even if you have special dietary needs. Besides the meals, snacks, water, and soft drinks are available continually throughout the day. After lunch we head to the classroom for our first “hands on” class. This class deals with your sewing machine tension. This was very interesting as the teachers, Heather Purcell (Mother Superior) and Annie Unrein are excellent instructors. The afternoon quickly pass as you play with the thread at the “thread bar”. The “thread bar” has many of the threads Superior sells and you are free to try one or all on your sewing machine and just “play”. At this point, time begins to blur a bit. We went back to the lecture area for more information, and dinner arrived. The first day at Superior ends and my friend and I head back to the motel for some rest. The second day had many activities. We work with one of Superior's newest products called Texture Magic. They provide the kits for our experiments. There is a trunk show (the first of several), and more lecture time. Of course, time for lunch and dinner again. Time passes so quickly with all the fun stuff you're doing. The third day is also gone before you know it. It starts with a class picture and then is used up having fun playing with threads and making some simple projects using some of Superior's specialty threads. Before you know it, it is over and time to go back to the motel and then home. It was a wonderful experience. I had a great and memorable time. |
